In this lesson, we’ll discuss the second step of how to sound like an American.
And that IS, you should know that ....
“When In Conversation, Forget About Grammar”.
Yes, you
should forget about grammar while learning how to speak English fluently, but don’t take my word for it.
Grammar is so important.
You’ll know what I mean by forget about grammar when you finish reading this post.
OK, let me make clear everything for you so that you can understand the concept. I want
YOU to speak freely. By that I mean; you should let the words and sentences flow out without thinking about grammar rules, don't bother your brain with questions that make it hard to continue talking and lead to PAUSES:
Examples of the questions I mean are:
* Am I using the right tense?
* Is the present perfect or past simple fit this situation?
* Did I use the correct grammar rule or not?
- Such thoughts leads to PAUSES, which stand as an obstacle in your conversation flow.
Before I go on with this point, I want to ask you; “How do kids in any part of the world acquire the language and learn to speak in their parents' / country's language easily? “
For sure, kids have no idea about Pronunciation, Grammar rules, Sounds, etc.
For sure, kids have no idea about Pronunciation, Grammar rules, Sounds, etc.
But they know one thing which is 'Imitation'.
Imitation is the way all kids use
to speak or communicate with you 'Parents and people around them'. They just listen to many words like (MOM, DAD, AUNT, etc) for a long time, then they imitate what they have listened to.
You’ll do the exact same thing.
Back to the point “Forget About Grammar” let me tell you that it's the same. When you imitate what natives say, you acquire the language faster and easier.
For example, when you imitate a native saying 'I'm just having a look.', 'I haven't finished it yet', an so on, you learn pronunciation and grammar at the same time as well as many skills that we will discuss later.
Now, go ahead, never allow anything to stop you from talking in English, forget about grammar, make mistakes, and keep working hard to see perfect results.
And always remember that "No Pain, No Gain"
